The reception at the 2017 MAIN Event at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in Detroit.

MAIN Event20, the eighth annual celebration of design that helps launch the North American International Auto Show, will have a distinctly Lawrence Technological University flavor when it takes place Sunday, Jan. 14 at the Max M. Fisher Music Center, 3711 Woodward Ave. in midtown Detroit.

Keith Nagara, director of LTU's transportation design program, is MAIN Event’s executive chairman. And Lawrence Technological University students will display their visions of the future of mobility at both MAIN Event – and at NAIAS, which opens for Press Preview Days Sunday as well.

LTU design and scholarship awards will be presented by five corporate sponsors to include:

  • The Society of Plastics Engineers will award three student scholarships for their exploration and innovative use of plastics as an enabler for design
  • Dassault Systemes will present the Next Generation of Design Innovation Award
  • Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will showcase and award scholarships to top students demonstrating their “imagination of future performance”
  • Magna Exteriors will define “what it means to bold in order to form a creative philosophy and design” by presenting the Magna Bold Perspective Award
  • Calsonic Kansei will showcase a collaborative design project with the second year transportation students

Two student concepts having Fiat Chrysler Automobile branding will be on display at MAIN Event – and during the NAIAS press preview Jan. 14-16, Industry Preview Days Jan. 17-18, and the public show Jan. 20-28, at the Lawrence Tech exhibit in the main concourse of Cobo Center.

MAIN Event will also see the presentation of auto industry awards, and will conclude with a fashion show featuring Michigan-based designers. MAIN Event – the name is an acronym for MotorCity Automotive Industry Night – runs from 4 to 8 p.m.

Credentialed media are invited to attend MAIN Event free. For registration, visit
